Location: Grand Forks, ND

Length: Long Term: 1 year with the possibility of a one-year extension (This residency is also flexible and open to different length times for situations such as sabbatical or developmental leave in the case of educators. Individuals may contact Wesley Smith for inquiries.)

Housing: None (Those applying early enough and getting accepted may be able to stay in university housing on campus if room is available)

Kilns: Wood, salt, soda, raku, electric and gas kilns

Expenses: Clay at cost (UND purchases clay in bulk so it is fairly cheap) (Recycled clay is free)

Funding/Stipend: University of North Dakota has several thousand dollars per year to support research via supplies or equipment for residents allowing residents access to free firings and glaze materials

Workspace: A private studio/work space

Responsibilities:

  • Work 15-19 hours/week in the clay studio area. This includes:

    • firing/loading kilns

    • Making work in the studio and being visible to students while being willing to answer questions

    • Spending some time together with the other resident and ceramics professor, Wesley Smith, (generally on Fridays) maintaining the studio and assisting Wesley

  • Occasional teaching duties may occur during faculty absence

  • Periodically provide demonstrations and/or participate in class discussions and mid-term and final critiques in the advanced classes

Number of Residents: 2 artists

Additional Opportunities:

  • 24/7 unrestricted building and studio access

  • Access to nationally recognized clay workshop artists/critiques

  • Solo or two-person show/exhibition at the end of the residency. The department produces posters, etc and supplies the food for the opening

  • Unlimited free firing of electric, gas, raku, pit, salt, soda, and wood (free wood—residents are responsible for splitting/processing)

  • Free access to glazes and glaze chemistry (the standard stuff; things like mason stains in amounts to color clay bodies are not included)

  • Opportunities to teach workshops for pay as an alternative to supplies

  • Access to a 3D Potter Scara clay printer in a dedicated space

  • Access to an Enduring Images Decal print system

  • The department clay club is active and has fall and spring clay sales in which the residents may choose to participate
