Length: Varied:

  • Short Term: 2 weeks - 2 months

  • Long Term: Minimum of 1 year with the opportunity to extend to a second year (Starts beginning of September)

  • Woodfire Residency Position: at least 1 year

Eligibility: The residency program at the Clay Studio of Missoula is designed to encourage the creative, intellectual, and personal growth of emerging and established visual artists. Residents should be enthusiastic and dedicated to their artwork, enjoy working with other people in a community studio setting and have working knowledge of the ceramic meduem, Previous experience working in a communal setting, such as a school or community studio, is strongly preferred.

  • 2 - Computerized 1227 Skutt kilns rated to ^8

  • 1 - 1027 Skutt kiln computerized rated to ^10

  • 1 - 1018 computerized Skutt kiln rated to ^10

  • 2 - Small test kilns

  • 1 - 34 cu ft soda kiln

  • 1 - 34 cu ft gas kiln

  • 1 - Car kiln

  • 1 - 720 cu ft large anagama wood kiln

  • 1 - Wood/soda kiln

  • 1 - Raku kiln

  • 2 - Wood kilns in the Missoula community

Expenses: Materials and reduced firing rates — For Woodfire Resident: free wood-firing

Funding/Stipend: $3,000/year stipend and additional professional development funding to long term residents

Workspace: 10’x10’ semi-private studio space

Responsibilities:

  • 5 hour/week helping with studio and gallery upkeep

  • Assist with production of fundraising events and outreach events

  • For Woodfire Resident: Expected tasks include teaching classes on wood firing, managing the wood firing community, acting as the contact to our wood suppliers, managing kiln maintenance, implementing safety policies, and supervising community and class firings

Number of Residents: 2-3 long term spots and 1 Woodfire resident
