Rochester Folk Art Guild

The Folk Art Guild is a unique, intentional community and craft center nestled on a sprawling 350-acre property in Middlesex, NY. This vibrant community is home to about 16 residents who work in a variety of crafts including farming, pottery, woodworking, weaving, and fibers. Communal life is a strong part of the experience, with most dinners and breakfasts shared together alongside participation in community activities.

Rooted in the spiritual teachings of G.I. Gurdjieff, the Guild maintains a thoughtful atmosphere. While residents are not required to partake in the spiritual observances, respect for the community’s philosophy is expected. (For more insight, interested artists can research Gurdjieff’s teachings.)

The residency program offers a 1-2 year term with optional housing available. Ceramic facilities are robust, featuring a large walk-in propane kiln, multiple gas kilns, two electric kilns, and a woodfire kiln. Residents share a studio with the Guild’s master potter, Annie Schliffer, and contribute about 15 hours weekly to community support within the ceramic studio and broader Guild activities.

The campus itself is artisan-built, boasting uniquely crafted architecture. A particularly charming detail is the collection of hand-forged, beautifully designed doorknobs scattered throughout the buildings, showcasing the community’s dedication to craft and creativity.
