Brockway Center for Arts and Technology

BCAT is a program deeply committed to making a meaningful impact in its community. Their primary mission is to create a vibrant center that exposes high school students to the arts, fosters a safe and supportive space for learning and growth, and provides valuable job training for unemployed and underemployed adults—all at no cost to the students. From the moment you step inside BCAT, it’s clear that this is a nurturing environment, thoughtfully designed around three core elements: surrounding youth with art, access to running water, and thriving plants—each contributing to a holistic and inspiring space.

The Ceramic Artist in Residence (AIR) program offers long-term residencies lasting one to two years. Each year, two to three artists receive free housing, materials, and firing support. In return, residents contribute approximately 25 hours per week by assisting with after-school programs for high school students (Monday through Friday, 2:30–5:30 pm), maintaining the studio, chaperoning field trips, and supporting various community projects. Additional hours beyond this commitment are compensated. This structure provides a meaningful opportunity for artists who are passionate about teaching, seek minimal personal expenses, and appreciate being part of a well-funded, mission-driven program.

During my visit, I was genuinely impressed by the passion and care evident in everyone at BCAT. The staff and artists alike are dedicated to uplifting their community and creating lasting change. Though located in a small town, BCAT commands a significant presence through its vibrant, caring, and committed people. The program continues to grow with a clear vision to expand its reach and impact.

While I was there, I had the chance to participate in a lively raku workshop and even fired a few pots myself. The following morning, a guest artist led a candle-making workshop—both experiences were engaging and enjoyable, showcasing the dynamic programming BCAT offers.
