Length: Long Term: 9 months (September-June) —for BA or BFA graduates or equivalent experience—

Housing: None

Kilns:

  • 1 — Anagama wood kiln

  • 1 — Soda/Salt cross draft kiln

  • 1 — Raku kiln

  • 4 — Electric kiln

  • 2 — High-fire gas kilns

Expenses:

  • Application fee

  • Materials outside provided materials stipend

Funding/Stipend: $150 materials stipend per 12-week term ($300 total)

Workspace: Semiprivate and shared space within the community studio. Personal resident shelving storage provided. No 24-hour access: access to studio during open studio hours (studios are closed during several weeks in December)

Responsibilities: 10 hours/week assisting in maintaining the ceramic studios (Residents are expected to fully participate within their department with organizational fundraisers and department duties)

Number of Residents: Up to 3 artists

Additional Opportunities:

  • Opportunity to share information and engage with students at Kirk Newman Art School and participate within their department and with organizational fundraisers and department duties

  • Participate in an annual Holiday Art Sale (November) and Arts Fair (June), providing professional development experiences for marketing and selling work

  • Several critiques of current works with faculty and peers will be scheduled

  • Group exhibition of work created during the residency

  • Free participation to up to two classes per term at the Kirk Newman Art School

  • Annual invited ceramic artist workshop in the winter

  • Strong mentorship opportunity for residents

  • Observe many aspects of a non-profit, community based art school

  • Other media present including fibers, painting, woodwork, photography/digital media, printmaking, heavy metals (welding and bronze foundry), sculpture and jewelry

  • Top notch museum with three rotating galleries

  • Museum was established in 1925 and the Kirk Newman Art School established in late 1940’s with 70-80 faculty. The residency program started in 2019
