Vermont Studio Center

Vermont Studio Center (VSC) hosts a diverse group of artists working across many media, with the majority being writers and poets. While ceramics is not the primary focus, the residency offers a sculptural ceramics program that encourages dialogue and collaboration with artists from other disciplines, creating a unique space for exploration and creative cross-pollination.

The residency sessions are short-term, lasting 2, 3, or 4 weeks. Each resident receives a furnished private room in a shared house near the studios. There is a residency fee, but full fellowships are available. Residents bring their own materials, though box clay can be purchased at cost. Studios include private spaces of 200 to 300 square feet and access to a larger communal workspace on the main floor of the sculpture building, which houses equipment for metals, wood, ceramics, and more. Two electric kilns, firing in the low to mid-range, are located adjacent to this larger studio.

VSC provides three served communal meals daily and maintains a self-serve tea and coffee station accessible 24/7. The campus is expansive, featuring five studio buildings, multiple housing options, a main office, gallery and dining facilities, and other structures. A picturesque river runs through Johnson, near the campus. Although a recent flood caused some damage, renovations and new construction plans are underway.

This residency is ideal for artists seeking a change of scenery and opportunities to connect with a wide range of creatives. It’s well suited for those wanting to work through unfinished ideas or find fresh inspiration. VSC has a history of sparking spontaneous collaborative projects among its residents, adding a dynamic and enriching layer to the experience.
