Craigardan

Craigardan offers a short-term summer residency program lasting two or more weeks, welcoming artists working in a variety of media including pottery, cooking, farming, and writing. The residency provides rustic, private tiny cabins inspired by a modern take on the Adirondack lean-to, complemented by a shared communal space and kitchen pavilion. Recently relocated to a new property, Craigardan has just built a new catenary arch wood kiln, which they aim to fire approximately every six weeks throughout the summer season.

There is a weekly residency fee, but all accepted residents receive a scholarship to help offset costs. Additional financial aid is available through work exchange and fellowships, making the program accessible to a wide range of artists.

Set in a stunning mountainous environment, Craigardan offers ample opportunities for outdoor activities and the chance to be part of a close-knit, active community. Residents have access to private studio spaces located either in one of the new barns or the farmhouse. While I visited during winter and was unable to see the studio and housing firsthand due to snowed-in paths, I enjoyed meeting many fluffy, content sheep and visiting the farm store, where I sampled delicious artisan bread and butter made from locally sourced ingredients.

One of the program’s strengths is its encouragement of cross-disciplinary exploration and creative dialogue among residents. If you’re seeking a summer residency that combines woodfire kiln access, farm animals, great food, and vibrant community engagement in a beautiful mountain and forest setting, Craigardan should definitely be on your list!
