Khnemu Studio on Fernwood Farm

Looking for a summer retreat far from city life—complete with open fields, studio freedom, a menagerie of animals, and a “shag-tastic” vintage RV to call home? Khnemu Studio might be exactly what you're looking for.

Located on Fernwood Farm, this residency supports a single artist each summer to live and work alongside Dawn Soltysiak, the resident artist and owner of Khnemu Studio. In exchange for free housing, unlimited studio access, firing, and materials, the resident is expected to contribute about 25 hours a week helping maintain the studio and working shifts at The Root Café—Dawn’s charming gallery and cafe located in nearby Fennville.

I visited the farm in the fall, after the studio had been closed up for winter, but even then, its character and charm were unmistakable. The studio itself is housed in a converted barn, with the full workspace opening up during the summer months. When you arrive, you're greeted by a lively crew of chickens, ducks, and geese wandering the property—plus two friendly dogs and a couple of cats who often keep residents company in the studio.

Before arriving, I made a stop at Dee’s Lakeshore Farm, where I had the pleasure of meeting Dee herself. I bought apples, honey, and jam—and she threw in a few extra apples “so you get your vitamins while on the road.” A lovely, wholesome encounter that set the tone for the rest of the visit.

Khnemu Studio is located 15 minutes from Lake Michigan, in the quiet countryside just outside of Fennville, and about 15 minutes from the larger town of South Haven. The surrounding farmland and peaceful setting make it a great spot to slow down and reflect.

Dawn described the residency as an ideal next step for recent BFA graduates—artists looking to continue developing their studio practice and clarify their creative direction in a supportive, low-pressure environment. Based on what I saw, I’d agree.

And then there’s the housing: a groovy 1970s RV complete with orange shag carpet and a disco ball. It’s a nostalgic, one-of-a-kind experience—though fair warning, if you’re taller than about 5'6", you might find the space (especially the shower and bathroom) a bit cramped. Still, it’s cozy, fully equipped, and adds to the offbeat charm of the residency. How many people can say they spent a summer making art while living in a vintage RV on a working farm?
