Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard

This unique art center maintains a strong connection to Harvard University, yet operates largely independently, fostering a vibrant and nurturing community. The ceramics program is bustling, with over 350 students enrolled at any given time. Alongside independent local artists, 2-3 invited artists-in-residence are welcomed each year, each provided with personal studio spaces.

The Boston area is a hub for ceramics education, with approximately 250 universities within a 20-mile radius offering adjunct teaching opportunities. This abundance of programs allows artists without MFAs to find teaching roles, and residents at Arts at Harvard are paid to teach classes, enriching the program’s dynamic environment.

While the cost of living in Boston is notoriously high and affordable housing can be difficult to find, Arts at Harvard provides valuable resources and maintains strong relationships with other ceramic centers in the city to support their artists-in-residence.

Located in the heart of Boston, the program benefits from excellent public transportation and bike-friendly streets, making a car unnecessary. On a personal note, I also enjoyed some top-notch oysters and lobster bisque during my Boston visit—always a bonus in my book!
